Change to COVID-19 rules and vaccine mandates

The New Zealand Government has just made a significant announcement on the COVID-19 rules and vaccine mandates. Here is what you need to know.

March 2022

The Government has indicated that some, but not all of the current COVID-19 rules will be dropped. As of April 5, the following Covid-19 rules will be removed:

  • Vaccine pass requirements;
  • Most vaccine mandates;
  • QR code scanning;
  • Outdoor gathering limits from (100 to 200); and
  • Masks will also no longer be required outdoors.

The traffic light system will remain in place as will vaccine mandates for health, corrections and border workers. Masks indoors are still required as New Zealand continues to move through the peak of the Omicron outbreak.

It is important to know that this announcement does not impact private employers and their internal vaccine policies. Whilst it is recommended that employers take necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees and customers, we understand employers may want to review and seek clarification on their current vaccine policies.
